Time-tossing the Lunar Truth

I09 recently complained that a viral marketing campaign is going too far in insisting on the veracity of the upcoming American horror film, Apollo 18, directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego.  This film is based on supposed 'found footage' of a hushed-up Apollo 18 mission.  According to the film's producers, the public were told that Apollo 18 was cancelled.  In fact, the mission took place and was a secret disaster.  The I09 reporter, Meredith Woerner, says she loves a mocumentary as much as the next girl, but when Dimension Films (a division of the Weinstein Company) recently told the press that the footage is absolutely 100 per cent real, she got annoyed.

In reality, NASA has enough problems, with its Shuttle program ending, the encroachment of private companies, relying on the Russians to service the ISS, and the droves of conspiracy theorists who believe the earlier Apollo moon landings never happened.  Yesterday, Boeing successfully launched its X-37B orbital spaceplane under a US Air Force contract. This film comes out in the midst of American soul-searching about how and why the glories of the 1969 moon landing and subsequent Apollo missions up to 1972 were not matched or repeated. Future manned missions are not set until the 2020s, and in the wake of budget cuts under the Obama administration, do not involve any American planned missions.  This is a serious blow to American claims on supremacy in space exploration.

Apollo 18 was practically begging to be made under these conditions.  On top of NASA's problems and America's currrent internal divisions and waves of self-doubt, think of the Millennial mentality that is willing to entertain, either with credulity or cynicism, watching this film.  The film's tagline is: There's a reason why we've never gone back to the moonWe are talking about a current perspective that sees a conspiracy theory time capsule as more plausible than the real explanation for deep problems with the Space Program that have finally come fully to light.  This means that there are realities about the way power is now exercised, and who is exercising it, which we do not want to face.  Despite the great landings on Titan and Mars, it means that the past 30+ years of efforts were not as stellar as they could have been, due to political mismanagement, politicized scientific administration, budget problems, misplaced priorities, and no consistent commitment to a larger vision. Finally, there were Space Station dreams of lower earth orbit of the 1970s and 1980s (which I have blogged about here); these were not as breath-taking, and much more expensive to execute, than anticipated.  Rather than getting to the bottom of this three-decade run of misguided performance, a generational failing if you will, there's a desire in some quarters to go back to the beginning of the period and blame the failure for the now-we-know-not-so-illustrious future on a conspiracy theory.  In other words, people in authority back then, in the early 1970s, were to blame, not those who followed.  This kind of thinking passes the buck to organizations, corporations and evil, now-dead-or-retired figures, rather than placing the blame where it belongs.  The real blame rests not on some false and secret horror clarified by this mocumentary, but on the people who did not succeed in propelling America's Space Program to the heights it could have achieved.

Caption for the image above: Part of the viral marketing for the film includes internet happenings related to the above poster seemingly for the Russian dub of Apollo 18 - but probably aimed at American audiences (see here, here and here).  This happening proclaims that the footage that exposed an American cover-up was Russian and is circulating fake American and Russian government documents on the internet: "With the recent discovery of Russian film footage that suggests that America’s Apollo 18 space mission actually did occur, despite being canceled by President Nixon in the early 1970s, The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that it has acquired the rights to a provocative new film project, titled Apollo 18. To be directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego from a screenplay by Brian Miller, the documentary-style sci-fi thriller will be produced by Russian filmmaker Timur Behmambetov (Wanted, 9, The Darkest Hour) and Michele Wolkoff, president of development for Bekmambetov Projects, Ltd. Production has been fast-tracked to begin in December, with a wide release planned for March 4. A quintessential Cold War story, Apollo 18 casts light on the covert and undocumented lunar mission that officially “never happened.” Bekmambetov, hired by Russia to shoot a documentary about the Russian space station, recently came across footage in its space archives that bolsters the idea that an Apollo 18 mission did, in fact, take place, and reveals startling evidence of extraterrestrial life forms. This actual footage will be part of Apollo 18, a paranormal thriller that will interpolate fact and fiction."

From the I09 report:
A few days ago mega-producer and Dimension Films head Bob Weinstein claimed that the much-buzzed-about lunar "found footage" movie Apollo 18 film was 100% real. Is he crazy? Or does he just think we'll believe anything? [In an EW interview, he claimed:] "People intrinsically know there are secrets being held from us. Look at WikiLeaks: There are secrets that are really true to the world. It's not bogus. We didn't shoot anything, we found it. Found baby!"

[To which the I09 reporter responds:] I remember quite clearly overhearing audience members vigilantly defend Blair Witch's authenticity at a first screening. Sure they were being duped, but it least the lie was plausible. I could easily be convinced that a crazy person murdered three kids on a camping trip. But you will never convince me that the tapes from a lost lunar mission were discovered by Dimension Films. Never.
Ironically, the sheer implausibility of this claim is the hook to get us believe that the movie is real - the found footage, and the people who are debunking the American cover-up - are supposedly Russian. Dimension Films is just the American messenger boy.

Add to this, I remember reading somewhere (don't ask me where - this is Fox Mulder territory) that the original moon landing hoax claims came from Russia in an effort to discredit the American Space Program. Forty years after the Americans' clear triumph over the Russians as far as lunar exploration was concerned, we find that Cold War propaganda is alive and well.  In fact, the Cold War is alive and well!   Of course, no one takes this really seriously - it's just a spring space movie.  But even the fun in it gives us permission to indulge the theme of secret American shame and failure.

Debunking it.  This found footage supposedly covers events from late 1973, which falls within the living memories of many, many people. Yet no one recalls a rocket taking off at that time? Why would an Apollo mission be kept secret? It theoretically occured during the Nixon administration, a president who was discredited and humiliated. Therefore, it's easy to sell the idea that Nixon would have lied a bit more to the American people.  Maybe the scandals of his presidency ran a little deeper.  It is clearly geared toward an audience willing and predisposed to believe this.  And yet - the footage, as far as I can see, is presenting film styles, images and themes that are utterly up to the minute.  The visuals are digital and crisp, not grainy and flickering.  Even the trailer is full of little film 'quotes.'  The actors holding the cameras - straight out of Blair Witch and films like Lynch's Lost Highway.  The flag wrapped around a stone outside the spacecraft is identical to the scene in Blair Witch where a cloth bundle is left outside the tent.  The creepy-crawlies inside the astronaut's suit - Alien. There's no jarring sense that the footage is 'dated.'  It responds seamlessly to our sensibilities right now, and many of the shock moments resemble the quiet little space thriller from a couple of years ago, Moon.

The film's producers anticipate an audience that would apparently rather believe a lie about the past than face the truths of the present and problems of the future.  It is part of a Millennial willing suspension of disbelief that has been building for some years - a mental trick that equates lies with truth, and truth with lies, through a manipulation of our understanding of time.

The film was originally scheduled for US release on March 4; it is now being released on April 22.

  1. Good grief, this is seriously irresponsible.

But judging by the trailer, the movie itself is so lurid that once it comes out, no one will take it seriously except the real hard-core nutters (the kind of people who think Obama is the Antichrist or the CIA killed JFK). There's an irreducible minimum of people like that in the population, unfortunately.

Damn we are just so lucky to be the ONLY planet out of millions as far as the eye can see, yet Earth is the only planet that sustains life right? It's the scared people like you with you blinders on, the reason the truth us kept secret... It's People like you that run your mouth about something your blind to that's allowing "obama" to ruin the USA... Good Job....

  2. I'm curious about how they intend to explain U.S. participation in Skylab and routine shuttle missions since 1973 if the shock of a failed mission is supposed to have had repercussions still felt today. Why should we suddenly become more reticent to send astronauts up today due to apprehension if we weren't thirty years ago?

  3. This is interesting in light of Canada's recent decision to forbid Fox News into the Canadian market. The Canadian Radio Act forbids lying on broadcast news. Whether you're religious or just believe in non-secular karma...this writer agrees that sending something false out into the world is bound to have negative repercussions.

  4. Pblfsda: If you watch the trailer, the claim seems to be that astronauts on the Moon were attacked by some kind of monster. The Russian writing on the movie poster above says "No one invited us to the Moon." So the idea seems to be that the Moon specifically is dangerous and we are staying away from it, but presumably near-Earth orbit wouldn't be.

So it's logically consistent in that limited way, but still absurd, sick stuff (I say "sick" because I can't help but think this somehow abuses the memory of the astronauts who actually have died in the space program), and of course if anything like what they depict had really happened, there's not a chance in Hell it could be covered up.

  5. I would agree that the movie abuses the memory of the astronauts who died in the space program. The willingness to abuse that memory, and twist truth in general about the space program, is an indicator of the huge popular appetite for lies over truth. Hollywood is (correctly) guessing that myth-making around notable failures in public enterprises over the past forty years is more comforting than facing the roots and causes of those failures.

There is also a growing taste for pessimism legitimized by this blatantly fake BS masquerading as the 'real truth.' This is a symptom of rampant gnosticism, that is a form of Christian heresy, in our culture. Certainly, this inverted 'real truth' is widely preferred over actual truths about real successes. Why are we not being presented with a sci-fi CGI film epic that draws from the Mars landings and Titan landing in the 90s and 2000s? Because it's more fun to point to NASA's glaring failure around further moon missions. But with all the embedded conspiracy theories in this turkey, the real reasons for that failure will never see the light of day. My post was hinting at the true sources of failure. No one talks about that.

This film picks up on all the typical Millennial tropes: the presentation of fiction as truth; the use of a time capsule artifact (usually found film footage) that supposedly confirms that fiction as truth; the use of cameras as 'objective observers' to 'debunk the (actual) truth that everyone previously believed; a mistrust of the government or any authority in any major field of serious human endeavour; conspiracy theories; a reinterpretation of the past and inversion of history (in this case, altering our view of the Cold War, wherein the Russians are cast as budding anti-heroes) to justify this.

To do this, the film uses techniques and symbols which borrow easily from several movies from the last thirty years.

  6. C'mon now. If the astronauts died on the mission and we never went back to the moon, how was the film recovered?

Kennedy was ready to squelch Vietnam, removing one of the best ways to control the populous: make an external threat. Look at Bush and terrorism.

  9. The movie claims real footage...but you can google the actors...It also stated that 840 rocks were brought to earth and some are missing...but when was the last time in the past 40 years you heard about a contamination of a rock invasion?? And really...the crab-rock aliens sprouted from Piraates of the Carribean 3...and just out of curiosity...these rock-crab aliens...if there is nothing but rocks and dirt on the moon...what do they eat?? Each other??? Do they wait thousands of years for humans to reach the moon??? And then...lol...after they contaminate you...lol...they just...explode?? WTF???? What kinda Sh** is that??? Don't get me wrong...I like sci-fi...But if this movie was real...I don't believe that after all this time...for the government to just leak this info...not after all the time spent to conceal it...I mean...what a script writer just happened to come across the footage?? Was it just laying around like the rocks??

  12. I think the idea was the crab rock people came from another planet via asteroid, hence the reason they're so abundant and active in the impact craters.

  15. Spider rocks is just ridiculous. But I am not a true believer of the government, they lie all day long to us. But spider rocks is taking it to far, if that is really what inhabits the moon no wonder we didn't go back. How boring would it be to deal with those rocks!

  16. To all of you that say, "how did we get the footage if it is on the moon?" Just think about it.... wasn't the first mission to the moon streamed live into the homes of every American? That was before Apollo 18. NASA could have easily and would have easily ( If Apollo 18 happened. I'm not saying it did or didn't) had all the film streamed live to them.

Also, most of you are only comparing these "rock crabs" to living organisms you know of on earth. How do you know they need food? I mean everything on earth needs some type of fuel to operate, but these aren't from earth. We just think these creatures need fuel because we haven't encountered anything that doesn't need it. And, did you ever consider that maybe they receive all the fuel they need from the sun? While from what we saw, they spend most of their time in the shadows of the craters, we did also see them in the light. Or, maybe they aren't even living. Maybe they are just technology created by other E.T.'s

Now, I honestly don't believe there are extra terrestrials on the moon, or anywhere for that matter. But, events represented in this movie could be possible. I think it is more likely that there was a secret "Apollo 18" mission. It was sent there, not as Guinea Pigs to be hunted by aliens, but to set up some kind of defense against the Russians or to do scientific experiments or whatever.... it doesn't really matter. While they were there, some tragic accident occurred and they all died. Since it was a secret mission NASA had no reason to tell anyone. Years later some footage proving there was a mission slipped out, A film writer discovered this footage and ran with it, creating the movie "Apollo 18"

  17. Whether or not one believes in E.T's is beside the point. We must take what from it what we will and leave the rest. I find it to be a bit mysterious that the website at the end of the movie is unattainable. Why might this be? Perhaps because there is truth to the whole story and once again the 'Powers that be' hide the truth as they have done since the beginning. I suggest to all you truth-seekers to focus on the real issues at hand, like the spiritual one of which humans were intended. We have come to earth to evolve to yet another wonderful place in time, despite the truths and lies of governments, corporations and secret societies that try to hide the experience altogether. I urge you to visit healingwiththemasters.com to grasp a spiritual understanding and then go to october2011.org to understand your role as an American citizen. 18. I honestly don't know what to believe...but I do believe there are so many things being staged and wronged to us as american citizens...as the constution states, we have rights...right?....but then don't we have a right not to follow these rights? therefor when you hear or see something, don't just pass it by, remain skeptical if you must but you never know...the government may overthrow threir rights for the protection of them and others....think about it.

  19. I believe that there MAY be a possibility of aliens for two reasons...one...there are millions of different types of life on this earth alone...and two...the universe is so huge that at the moment it is impossible to rule out life anywhere else because nothing has been discovered...it'd be like The Old World denying existance of a New World before Colombus...if that was the case, the America as you know it wouldn't be...

But I question the movie...wouldn't Neil Armstrong have been infected on his voyage??

I mean, the first voyage would have been just as a surprise as it was to Apollo 18 atronauts...What...he already knew what to do??

He fought them off and bagged all the evidence??

Hell, out of the those 840 rocks that were sampled back to earth...none of them were Aliens??

I mean...these are supposed to be exploding crab rocks that infect you by crawling in your skin...

I like the idea someone said that they may have come from an asteroid landing on the moon...but...how does a rock or a crab jam transmission frequencies?? Hmmm....

In our oceans...we have rocks...and crabs...hell...we probably have crab rocks...but can they jam frequencies???

    Oh that's right...they didn't come from space...

    Or did they??

"youre not watching me die!!) Dont get me wrong I think the movie wasnt great, (at all!) but at the same time you have to look beyond the things they left out.

Like, Spider/ crab aliens! WTF! They appear, but randomly we see, what appears to be a malnurushed greyhound appear? That must have been able to walk on two legs as well as have thumbs becuase they were able to sabotage all their equipment. This film could have been ten times better. Just by silly things. Like the comment above, about jamming their com.

I mean, rocks that have superior tech than us? No way! I cant even be asked to type anymore, but....

Aliens that live in the surface in either crab/ spider form or dog form...?

Have no food supply, other than a tasty cosmonaut and astronaut every few years.

Live in the dirt, but still have devices capable of blocking communications.

Can crawl in your suit (without there being an air leak) then implant themselves in your skin (without you knowing).

Then infect you and take over your mind..? Even after being removed!?

  25. There were two Saturn V rockets built for Apollo's 18 and 19. The missions were cancelled due to "lack of interest". Apollo 17 TV ratings were very low. In December of 1972, few Americans knew we were still going to the moon. The Saturn V rocket for Apollo 18 was used for the Apollo/Soyuz link in space. The Saturn V rocket for Apollo 19 was used for Skylab. There never was a scheduled Apollo 20 or Saturn V built for Apollo 20.

  26. I just watched the movie and know that a few seens are real, not from an apollo 18 mission but a previous one. None of the rock crab spider aliens were real. My dad worked for a company that made the space shuttles, and he knew about every mission. If there was an Apollo 18 he would have known as the company he worked for did a lot of work. I have pictures of my dad standing by a space shuttle named Enterprise. I do not believe Apollo 18 happened, and just watched the movie, like all movies I watch, as though it was a movie and not even 1% true. People will believe what they want so there's really no point in being rude to each other. If there where rock crab aliens on the moon, they may not need food or air like we do. I agree with what someone wrote earlier that we have no way of knowing if others exist in space. We've barely explored any of it. At this time no one can prove or disprove Apollo 18, or aliens. Let's try to stop being such a hateful race of human beings, and let people believe what they want. Everyone has different views on life, and it would be like going up to a catholic and trying to convince them GOD isn't real. It's a waste of time.

  27. 9/11 was very Hollywood too!! Meant to scare people and take their focus away from more critical matters the government was concerned with. This movie is the American governments scare tactic not to go there because they simply can't spend the money on going until they secure as much oil as they can and by their forecasts, 2020 looks like the year they will have a planned mission.

  30. I just watched movie and thought it was well made and plausable, Earth a long time ago was hit by another large planet. This planet along with bits of Earth make up the Moon. If a life form existed on Earth prior to this collision, it may be possible that it survived the collision, evolved in its new environment and still resides on the Moon as rock crab like creatures and any number of other creatures that share a common ancestor. Just some food for thought.

  31. enough fuel to get into orbit and this fuel weighing several thousand tons just to get to that orbit. 250 thousand plus miles to reach the lunar surface....where is that fuel stored if the lunar lander is just barely large enough for a crew of maybe 4? and then the fuel needed to propulse back off the lunar surface for the 250 thousand plus miles back to earths orbit. true there is very little gravity on the lunar surface.....but there would still need to be thousands of pounds of fuel stored in the LEM to escape the gravity of the surface...not to mention the fuel needed to propel the orbiter back to earths orbit. just where is all this fuel stored?

  32. there is supposedly so much dust and silt on the lunar surface.....dont you think if a lander set down on the surface.......the cloud of dust...(blown into a zero gravity environment being blown by the rocket boosters) would send that cloud so large that the plume could be seen from earth?. the dust would be floating for untelling how long and the astronauts wouldnt even be able to see to venture out from the lander.....let alone take photgraphs

  45. To all thoughs people that wrote in about the movie being real or not real.(it's not real) You've finally been given a glimps of what is to come. Just as kulbrick did the first landing for public simpathy, this film has done it's job. We are now arguing among ourselves over the validite of a representation. If our empirical leaders(governments) were for the people we'd have seen a lot more footage than what they fed us. Power has it's perks. In their(empirical leaders) We are on a need to know basis. Look at the 17 trillion dollars obama gave to the banks, Does anyone really know if the money went to them? Everyone knows obama said it did. But the u.s. is in worse shape now. We are on a need to know basis. The empirical leaders have said, we don't need to know what they do with the money, it's none of our business. Welcome to the age of empirical rule. Democracy is dead. Ballots can be changed at the touch of a button. We're slaves so get used to it.

  49. I got it. The Moon Rock Crabs are the scouts for the Deceptorcons. There is absolutely no other way they would know we were here, to begin their invasion plans. Also, it matches the colour of my curtains.

  50. I love the movie! The Hollywood part are the ET life forms depicted in the film. The truth of the film depects the ugly truth of the Cold War n the CIA's on going corruptional ways. The Rock Spiders are based off the writers idea of what life form could have originated on the moon. It's not a tropical, exotic climate. It's rocky and sandy/dusty. We have a tropical/exotic climate hence the billions of beautiful species on our planet. From deep sea, to in the ground, to in the air. Species that adapt and evolve to their surroundings. Just like the species the writter created. A rocky dirty climate.. Hey how bout a rock with our scariest dirt species we all hate .. Spiders! Back to the cold war, corruption. The story shows n tells that anyone who interferes with the CIA's command will be abolished. Hence the reasons for the assaanations of the Kennedy's, and senior officials, and anyone who got in the way of testifying that there are, and were ET's in each launch. The need to know basis. The if you leak any info that we deem top secret. You will be executed. All coruption leads to war or slilencing of the lambs. They feared that if Kennedy got his way and we the people would see or watch actual footage of ET's that the entire populous would crumble in utter terror n become unstablized drastically... Crumble. Corruption is the ugliest yet awe inspiring way to run a tight ship. A way and only way to keep a species like us controlled and orderly. For if it didn't exist thered be way too many Indians and not enough chiefs if you will. A uncontrollable populous that would ruin this beautiful earth and species. Like the movie idiocracy. Ok I'm done for now.
