TIMES, TIME, AND HALF A TIME. A HISTORY OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM.Comments on a cultural reality between past and future. This blog describes Metatime in the Posthuman experience, drawn from Sir Isaac Newton's secret work on the future end of times, a tract in which he described Histories of Things to Come. His hidden papers on the occult were auctioned to two private buyers in 1936 at Sotheby's, but were not available for public research until the 1990s.
I will be away from the blog for until April 30, due to work demands. See you soon!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the video suggestion, Anon, although I don't know what it has to do with my post. This video is an example of the kind of anti-American pseudo-smart critique that is rampant right now everywhere - in high brow and low brow circles, on the Web and off. It's part libertarian, part prepper. It has several flavours too - sometimes bringing in conspiracy theories, anti-Semitism, 9/11 truthing, etc etc.
ReplyDeleteThe video certainly makes compelling points, but then as it bangs the drums for popular revolution in the United States, it misses one huge glaring point. The video asks: who benefits? And the person who made the video responds: the financial institutions which 'own' stakes in the Federal Reserve.
Allow me to suggest - who else benefits if the aims of this video are met? If there is total revolution in America and outright anarchy in the name of 'safeguarding' America from a corrupt government before it's too late? The answer is Russia and China.
I suggest that Americans who blindly indulge in this kind of quasi-revolutionary libertarian thinking are playing directly into Chinese and Russian hands without understanding what they are doing. I would even expect that some of the Web rumours and hacking manifestoes which are couched in terms of American post-Postmodern rhetoric of safeguarding liberty at all costs originate from Russia and China. Americans on the Web are very naive about how easily their love of liberty can be manipulated to make them turn on their own government.
This is not to say that the content of the video is untrue. The US has indeed become an imperial power with wealth tied to the oil trade and its government ruthlessly and cleverly plays every card it can to maintain its power.
Nevertheless, the alternatives are sobering. One need only glance at internal affairs in China and Russia to grasp that either or both of these powers running the world would not necessarily be a better alternative.
America has terrible flaws, great virtues, and one central ideal that is both strength and weakness. This last factor is its sacred vanity that the light of truth is ever evident in the act of fighting for liberty. Americans are vulnerable to believing in anything that seems to stand for this cause, because this principle is so deeply embedded historically and ideologically in the American psyche.
It is incredibly easy to present something to them that looks like that ideal and yet is not. I suggest to you that the true originators of the 'evil, crumbling America' thesis have a point about the ruthlessness of the USA. However, these power rivals are no less ruthless and are using the Web to erode the coherence of American common civic consensus. And in pursuing that goal piecemeal on the Web, these rivals of the US are winning support not only from vast numbers of people outside of the US in the developing world, but also among 'enlightened' people who fancy themselves in the know in the developed world, and in the US, among libertarians and members of left and right political persuasions alike. This last factor is a tragedy for the United States: it is horrible that its people could be tricked into destroying liberty even as they think they are rising up to defend it.
