Countdown to Hallowe'en 7: Millennial Romantic Gothic

It is sometimes difficult for those who skate the surface of the Web to grasp how profoundly and rapidly the Internet is altering global cultures. The tidal wave of data and engaged masses create an exponentially-growing multimedia jumble. That hot mess is infinitely anachronistic and rudely disconnected from knowledge and context.

Today, an example of how social media have moved past the Hallowe'en themes in this post and this post, to generate a rumbling new Millennial subculture.

This tumblr site, hosted by one 'C0untess Bathory' (see my post on the real countess here), stalks the grey area between early modern prints, fin-de-siècle children's illustrations, fairy tales, film, comics, porn, neo-Paganism, Satanism, neo-Romanticism, new century Gothic, body modification (whose cultists have lately achieved notoriety with bagel head saline injections and elective self-amputation), BDSM, horror, and general Web underbelly NSFW weirdness into one, post-Postmodern Romantic Gothic mash-up.

  1. Dan Zukovic's "DARK ARC", a bizarre gothic modern noir dark comedy called "Absolutely brilliant...truly and completely different..." in Film Threat, was recently released on DVD and Netflix through Vanguard Cinema (http://www.vanguardcinema.com/darkarc/darkarc.htm), and is currently
debuting on Cable Video On Demand. The film had it's World Premiere at the Montreal Festival, and it's US Premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival. Featuring Sarah Strange ("White Noise"), Kurt Max Runte ("X-Men", "Battlestar Gallactica",) and Dan Zukovic (director and star of the cult comedy "The Last Big Thing"). Featuring the glam/punk tunes "Dark Fruition", "Ire and Angst" and "F.ByronFitzBaudelaire", and a dark orchestral score by Neil Burnett.
