According to Chinese social media rumours and this report, around noon, local time, on 13 February 2020, there was a large explosion in the vicinity of the new Leishenshan hospital which the Chinese built in a week in Wuhan. The area was attended by Chinese military helicopters. According to the video above, the authorities denied hearing the explosion and claimed they received no calls about it.

There are counter-claims online (as here) that this is fake news and the footage is from an earlier explosion in Tianjin in 2015. However, the footage used in debunking articles does not match the explosion footage circulating - purportedly from Wuhan yesterday - on Weibo.

One of the less-reported aspects of the coronavirus epidemic is the ramping up of US Navy manoeuvres in the South China Sea. For years, the Chinese have been dominating the South China Sea, to the consternation of other countries.

The sandbars, along with swarmings of Chinese vessels in foreign waters, and the construction of hundreds of Chinese airports, have all recently alarmed many countries, even raising eyebrows in Australia and New Zealand. In 2019, Clive Palmer's United Australia Party ran a scare ad about a Chinese private airport, built in Karratha, West Australia, which seemingly has clandestine military capability. This ad was attacked by the UAP's political opponents as fear-mongering.

There are now several hundred videos and reports on the nCov (COVID19) coronavirus each day. For my readers to have an idea of what kind of unconfirmed information is circulating on the Internet - and which may or may not be related to the pandemic - here is a NSFW photograph.

There is a report that a Vietnamese town of over 10,000 people in Bình Xuyên district was isolated on the afternoon of 12 February 2020; more chatter claims that over 2,000 people are quarantined in Saigon because the country is favoured by Chinese tourists. This supposed rumour comes from the Vietnamese military via 4chan. The rumour maintains that the Vietnamese government is following the same cover-up policy as the Chinese government because they do not want to damage their tourist industry.

Due to the volume of information, I will publish short posts with fragments which highlight one issue at a time.

Please note that there are comments on Reddit that the above video, which talks about three children in one body bag, may not be related to the coronavirus; two Redditors claimed that this footage came from an old report about carbon monoxide poisoning. I can't prove that. The protective garb of the people attending the dead children looks like it comes from the epidemic period in Wuhan, but I can't prove that either.

Pandemic Chats in the Darkness 1: The Black Swan Event

To hear some people talk, we are already in World War III and do not know it. There are discussions online about the coronavirus which are far more extreme than MSM reports. I will release some of this information here in a series, since they are evolving into different narratives.

Beware the Biased, Unsourced Source

The source in this post is 4chan, which is racist, dubious, disreputable and censored for many reasons. They are politically aligned against the WHO, as you can see from the image above. They do not believe WHO reports. They have a definite bias.

However, 4chan is also known as a place where mainstream people sometimes come to release actual leaks. It is assumed that 4chan is chosen because the members of the Internet's alt-media monitor it and disseminate supposed leaks as a kind of under-narrative. The site's bad reputation as a source enables anonymity and plausible deniability for any leaker. Anything stated there can all be dismissed as LARPing, shitposting, and rubbish.

In between the seventeen-year-olds trading Nazi cartoon frog memes and nude vaginal photos, an occasional thread with real meat will appear. In January and February 2020, the site has featured leaks from people who claim to be working in Chinese hospitals and in American and UK disease control organizations. They are alarmed. Or they appear to be.

The first fragment (collected in one image, below) is supposedly from a leaker from the UK Department of Disease Control (DDC). The person's posts describe the virus as a bioweapon. For what it is worth, I could not see any British-specific or American-specific spelling in the person's posts.

• Heavily modified "chimera" strain of flu
• "It produces rapid death while hiding behind a usually-harmless flu-type infection."
• "I don't know what the US military might know."
• It will cause an economic Black Swan event.
• Not developed in Wuhan - it comes from another lab, "elsewhere." 
• "Developed by China as a possible WMD."
• The Wuhan quarantine is real, but there are other quarantined epicentre cities which China is not revealing.
• The virus is excreted through sweat - you can catch it by touching the skin of infected people.
• It spreads through air, blood, food, water. IE food in grocery stores can be contaminated.
• The illness caused by the virus presents in stages: (1) asymptomatic; (2) flu-like stage that heals up and makes the patient think they have recovered; (3) then it hits the brain: "then it's, well, whatever the fuck this is deep down"
• "The lungs secrete blood when infected fully." It causes the bronchi to rupture, so that infected people cough up blood, infecting anyone who tries to assist them.
• There are vaccines which can be administered before or during the flu stage.
• Death rate 70%-85%
• "We don't know exactly how it got out ... we do not think this was done intentionally."
• "At the highest level close-door discussions of international disease control, the only theories about this outbreak so far is what will exist after it."
• "Expect pics of dead people on social media soon. Cities."

One anon asked, "How likely is it what you have is just flu and not this high-tech disasterpiece." The leaker did not say. But if this information is true, you may have flu and recover. But you will not know whether you had a normal flu until a week or weeks later, when either nothing happens - or the final stage of novel coronavirus will return.

Warnings against Reading Weaponized Disinformation

My posting of this information does not constitute my belief in this information, nor my desire to spread fear. This 'Pandemic Chats' series is published here to make people aware of the scope of discussion. I do not know whether this is a milestone in the history of real bioweapons in public health or a milestone in the evolution of weaponized online propaganda. Or both.

But also understand that if these are real leakers and they are telling the truth to the Internet Underground to relieve their consciences, then the world is now a different place. 

I cannot assess the veracity, sources or accuracy of this (dis)information. Some of these fragments and citations refer to legitimate medical publications, which you can read, if you have time. If the rumours are true, you don't have time.

Coronavirus: An Abundance of Caution

There are so many sources floating around relating to this pandemic that I will begin to present fragments of information briefly or without comment.

For today, I will say that Daniel Defoe's Journal of the Plague Year (listen to the audiobook here) is a good portrayal of psychology during an epidemic. In preparation, you should listen to it now, even though it is a 17th century English source.

Defoe reported that some people who were infected became reckless and wished death on others. They knew they would die, and tried to take as many other people as they could with them. This may seem strange, but we have seen this reaction in Wuhan, China, where some infected people deliberately try to infect health care workers at hospitals. A video below shows a presumably infected group of people trying to spread the virus on elevator buttons. Notice in the next video that a cautious person has developed a counter-measure for riding elevators.

Preppers always talk about stocking up: sacks of rice and beans, batteries, water, vitamins, guns. The first and fourth videos above suggest that there is more to prepping that that. People who survive in disaster zones are clever, inventive, and observant. They adapt to a changed environment. They don't go into denial and they keep functioning. No one wants to become the poor person scaling the outside of a building in desperation, as in the above, tragic, second video.

There are many unknowns now, but if you want to prepare, cultivate a greater awareness of your environment and an abundance of caution, even when it seems silly or unnecessary. I don't mean go into full Bourne Identity paranoia, but learn to recognize when normal activity is out of whack. For example, regarding Hurricane Katrina and the Fukushima meltdown, I have written on this blog about one of the clearest warning signs of impending disaster: the wealthiest people in the area pack up and leave. They usually do this all at once, say, over a weekend. If you observe this happening, look around, ask some questions, have a think about things. Consider whether you are able to leave as well. If you couldn't do it now, figure out what it would take to be able to do that and work towards it. Do you need money, a passport, a visa? Plan where you would go. Have more than one option.

Circumstances can change in an area in a matter of hours. Sometimes it takes the news cycle days to catch up with local events. Pay attention to people behaving or driving erratically.

Don't go everywhere in public staring at your smartphone. If you witness strange events unfolding, you may wish or need to use the smartphone to record what you see.

Be more mindful of the advice to avoid public transportation, lavatories, restaurants and laundromats, and plan accordingly. Pay attention to authorities, but don't rely on them to do everything for you. Know where public authorities' obligations to you start and stop.

Don't wait for the press conference which announces the outbreak has started. Two French schools near a touristed ski resort are closed after possible exposure to coronavirus and the area is facing a probe. Don't be like the French parents who are amazed that their children's schools and the local government didn't inform them of infection risks in the Alps. Parents should know exactly what their children's school policy and procedures are on the coronavirus, the regulated time frames for action, the contact names, the telephone numbers, the hierarchy of authority.

Everyone in your immediate circle should know these details. Don't rely on your spouse or partner to handle everything and remain oblivious. Don't leave your children in the dark.

House pets are not susceptible now, but imagine the heartbreak if the virus mutates and they become vulnerable. Even though it is not necessary to do so, look around now for alternatives to the communal dog park; clean out the cat box more often. You can see Redditors discussing pet care in the outbreak here.

That is, understand potentials and take cautious measures before you have no choice. Look at your life, and consider where the vulnerable points are. Scan online for policies, sources, regulations, administrative bodies, and reports, so that you know how those personal concerns may relate to public health. This information would not be part of general news coverage of the coronavirus, unless it later, unfortunately, becomes relevant.

• Airborne? Yes, confirmed in Shanghai on 8 February 2020 (see here): "The Chinese government is urging residents to cancel all social activities and avoid large gatherings of people, reports China Daily." Reports do not indicate how far a distance the virus can float through the air; most articles use the phrase: "a long distance." Unconfirmed: I have seen mention that it can persist in the air for six hours and cannot find a medical reference for that.
• Disinfect desks, keyboards, dinner tables, door handles, telephones, cellphones, car handles, gear shifts, and auto steering wheels, light switches, toilet seats. Avoid public bathrooms and laundromats; you can catch it through fecal matter; shut toilet lids before flushing; clean toilets, bathrooms, showers with anti-viral, hospital-grade cleaners daily; disinfect your house daily; you can see US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) label standards for anti-viral cleaners here; EPA coronavirus statement here, which discusses the regulation of anti-coronavirus disinfectants and their effectiveness.

• CDC coronavirus infection page; you can catch it through the eyes as well as the nose and mouth via coughing/sneezing droplet infection, emphasize hand washing, alcohol rubs, surgical gloves, masks, goggles and disinfect / discard exposed protective gear and exposed clothing after use
• I could find no mention of whether you can catch this coronavirus through your ears, for example by sharing ear buds. 
• This virus obviously does not cause a sexually transmitted disease; coronaviruses generally affect the nose, sinuses, and throat and cause a respiratory illness; but close contact during sex would almost certainly result in droplet infection.
• Virus survives nine days - possibly more - on exposed surfaces
• Infection can occur after a 15 second exposure
• Plane flights: National Geographic advisory; CDC traveler advisory
• Mother to in utero infant transmission possible but unconfirmed; non-infected baby has been delivered from an infected mother by cesarean section
• On 6 February 2020, the White House asked US researchers to investigate the origins of the coronavirus and to confirm whether it was lab-created; this, despite high-level denials that the bioweapon story is a stupid Russian conspiracy theory (see: here, here, here)
• On 9 February 2020, a supposed CDC staffer went on 4chan and stated he or she was willing to answer two questions. After some hazing and insults, which are typical of 4chan, the staffer was asked if the virus was a bioweapon. The response: "Data most recently released and reviewed as of today gives plausibility to it being bio-engineered. This is based on exceptionally low probability of the identified amino acid chains occurring naturally. However, we don’t currently assess China as having access to some of the technology needed to do so. Only three countries have sufficiently advanced bioengineering technology: US, Russia, and Israel. No US organization or military component has confessed and from what we’re told Russia and Israel also maintain plausible deniability. Current evidence suggests another country may have stolen the necessary technology needed to bioengineer NCoV19."
• Anons also asked this supposed CDC staffer other questions: "what is the real mortality rate and R0?" and "How long projected until it's really, really spreading in USA?" and "Was that Biosafety level 4 laboratory in Winnipeg connected to all of this?" In response to a query about the biowarfare tweet below, the staffer wrote: "Yes that tweet is relevant as my first answer corroborates. However, the real Chinese numbers as we were told of this morning are closer to about 430k infected, over 30k [dead?], and about 3k recovered. Lastly, NCoV19 is a Coronavirus not a fungus. That said, it has behaviors similar to what is known as a bacteriophage. This is the first time this has been seen ever." Note that as of 9 February 2020, the official numbers were approximately 40k infected, 900 deaths, and 3,300 recovered. If true, this means that there are ten times more people infected than the Chinese government has stated; there are approximately 29k concealed deaths; and the death rate is higher. But this is all rumour and subject to endless questions and uncertainties. The anons were unimpressed and dismissed this visitor from their forum, as per their usual shitposting: "I guess it's time for bed since you have school early tomorrow."

• R0 2.2, as cited in the JAMA article (7 February 2020) discussed in the video at the top of this post; other sources have placed the R0 higher; Jonathan Read of Lancaster University, UK, placed the R0 between 3.6 and 4.0, which is apocalyptic.
• Infected people can suddenly collapse, possibly through cytokine storm
• Some people are super spreaders, discovered by hospital staff who caught the infection from a super spreader patient
• Infected people who recover can become infected again; those who recover face an aftermath of lung, heart and kidney injuries and disease
• Antibiotics can prevent secondary infections but of course will not help against the virus

• Chinese numbers of infected and dead are minimized and do not reflect the reality on the ground; thus, analyses using official numbers, even if sound in their approach, will be off
• Given that Chinese numbers are inaccurate, observers are watching the outbreak in Singapore closely, because they expect medical transparency and meticulous record-keeping from Singapore.
